What We Do

The Nantucket Marine Mammal Conservation Program reaches out to the public through local media and community events and nationally as a member of the Whales Need US Coalition.  We regularly take part in island events, providing information, outlining opportunities for further education, and encouraging involvement from the public in marine mammal conservation causes. Working with teachers in our schools, we provide resources, facilitate projects and bring experts to the island to motivate and expand young minds.

Our History

NMMCP was founded in 1977 on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts by Jean Rioux.  Ms. Rioux sustained the program for three decades through her passion and commitment to marine mammals.  She has served as Director Emeritus since 2009.  Scott Leonard, Director of Operations and Michelle Perkins, Education Co-ordinator have lived on Nantucket and worked with Jean as volunteers since 1998.  Valerie Leonard is (NMMCP) Washington DC representative.
